ARYSTA WEED CONTROL

Although Arysta LifeScience South Africa has a huge presence in the local crop production market, its IVM division –which specialises in non-crop weed control – is a less known entity.

IVM was established more than 30 years ago, with industrial vegetation management as our main focus. Although employers have come and gone over the years with mergers and takeovers of a number of companies, the people who make the division work, are just about the same bunch – only with much more experience and knowledge!

Over the last decade and a half, our focus zoomed in on control of alien invasive vegetation and indigenous problem plants, which include several tree species that have the ability to encroach on pastures. As far as alien invasive plants (AIP’s) go, think Lantana, Pom-pom weed, Seringa as well as a host of other declared weeds. Examples of indigenous tree species which can render pastures all but useless in terms of carrying capacity, are Sickle bush, Black thorn, Blue thorn and Mopane.

To that end, Arysta LifeScience’s IVM division

can offer a tried and tested product range

second to none. Combined with an experienced

national agent network and sound technical

support, customers have become used to top

notch service. Whether you want to control

sub-merged aquatic weeds in dams and ponds,

or selectively remove unwanted trees and shrubs

on a game farm, or treat game fences to avoid

fire damage; IVM is the one place where help is

always at hand. Innovation is our strong point;

with Arysta LifeScience applying for the patenting

of two unique formulations: Kaput 100 Gel and Tandem WSG.

  • Kaput 100 Gel combines two tried and tested compounds in a gel form. This gel-based herbicide is applied with a paint brush to stumps of freshly cut trees, while the application method gives a great degree of selectivity – which those with conservation in mind greatly appreciate. Using Kaput requires neither measuring nor mixing of herbicides, wetting agents or dyes and certainly no complicated calculations. It even contains a UV stable colorant which makes supervision of a bush clearing operation a walk in the park.

  • Tandem WSG is a unique water soluble granule formulation containing two non-selective active ingredients which has a proven synergistic action. It controls a broad spectrum of grasses and broadleaf bossies and then keeps them away for up to a year under normal conditions.

Arysta LifeScience focuses strongly on research, being constantly on the look-out for innovative solutions. Research and development, however, takes time and Mother Nature has many tricks up her sleeve to keep us humble. In effect, a new registration only materialises after about three years when working with woody plants. There are some 1700 tree species native to Southern Africa, of which just over 120 are Acacias. This makes research on even a small minority of this vast but diverse group of plants a mammoth task.

Registration is critical. Without a registration, one cannot legally recommend a product for a specific end use. The same applies to the user though: if the end use does not appear on the product label, that muti cannot be used legally for such an application. Therefore, what is printed on the label is as important as what is not!

As a company at the forefront of new developments in the industry, Arysta LifeScience is sensitive to the growing demand for its products in the game industry. We understand the need for proper field management and our products and services are focussed specifically on providing tailor-made solutions for the modern game farmer.
